Why translation apps butcher idol and group names

Korean stage names, group names and fandom names are usually constructed from everyday morphemes. To a translator with no entity list, there is nothing marking them as names — no capitalisation cue like English has, and often no grammatical signal either. The safest statistical choice is to translate the noun, so that is what happens.

In running speech the problem compounds. Korean drops subjects constantly, so a name may be the only anchor in the sentence. Translate the anchor and the whole caption drifts.

Before translation, the audio has to be transcribed. A recogniser trained on general Korean will nudge an unfamiliar stage name towards a more common word that sounds similar. By the time the text reaches the translator, the name is already gone — the translator is faithfully translating the wrong word.

A translation glossary is a list of terms with a rule attached: recognise this, and either keep it as-is or map it to a specific target term. It runs on top of the model rather than inside it, which is why it is reliable — it does not depend on the model having seen enough fandom text.

Echo ships with about 770 K-pop terms: official group and member names, fandom names, fanchant vocabulary, livestream slang and platform words like Weverse, Bubble and fancam. Those terms survive both recognition and translation.
